— Bea —

She had waited all day for this moment. Promising her father to stay nearby had created the opportunity for boredom to set in. She had felt jittery and restless, unable to distract herself with a visit to Chusi. Now, she looked again in the mirror.

Smoothing her skirt, she took a deep breath. Her merlot dress reached to the floor, fanning out at her hips and dipping low between her breasts. She had added a golden twine about the trim, swirling in delicate loops along the hem, sleeves, and corset. The deep hue brought her auburn hair to life and made her eyes darken in contrast. She picked up the final touch off her desk. A mask made of leaves of various fall colors.

She could not wait to see the gardens, how they had been transformed for the night’s occasion. Walking downstairs, she stepped outside and gasped. Fireflies flitted over the space, giving it a soft, warm glow. The flowers bloomed along every edge of the grassy path until it opened upon a large meadow, filled with tables and chairs that surrounded a dancefloor.

She felt giddy, as if she were walking on air, and took in the aromas of the night around her. She walked about the garden, transformed from its previous alcoves and grass paths, to the tables and greeted various guests.

“You look divine, my love.” King Osin placed a hand on her back, kissing her temple. He wore a satin suit the color of the night sky, causing him to appear even taller. His round cheeks dimpled below a mask of twigs and raven feathers.

“Handsome as ever, Father,” Bea smiled. She looked around at the gathered guests as the music began to play.

“Go, search for him.”

She looked over at her father, his eyes twinkled. She blushed and nodded, stepping away from his side to walk about the meadow. Her breath caught at the sight of him. A black suit with his hair smoothed back and a white mask of daffodil petals caused his peridot green eyes to glow.

“Bea… you are breathtaking, yet a breath of fresh air all at once.” Alston reached for her hand, bowing as he placed a kiss on her fingers.

She quickly tugged down her sleeve as he released her hand. She was not sure what the gray dragon on her wrist meant, but she knew she had never seen something like it before. She did not wish to expose Chusi to her court, if the symbol was related to her and her babies. It had appeared the day of the hatchlings’ birth after all.

She smiled at Alston. "It's magical. All of it. The garden, the music… you. You look exquisite."

"Would you care to dance?" He offered his hand, holding it out to her as the music played.

She set her hand in his, allowing him to lead her to the dancefloor. Embracing her, he held one of her hands against his chest, curling his fingers around hers, and placed the other hand on the small of her back.
